About Matthew Green

When I was starting out, a much more experienced journalist spelled out a principle that seems obvious in retrospect, but which I must have been struggling to grasp: “The news is about change,” he said. “If there’s no change, there’s no news.” Twenty-odd years later, change no longer seems enough. What I love to write about is transformation.

The transformation a soldier must embrace to heal from trauma inflicted in war. The transformation that occurs in individuals who feel so moved by the ecological condition of the planet that they offer themselves for arrest. And, in my more recent work, the transformation our societies, economies and political systems will need to undergo to slow climate change.

And I’m also engaged in the question of how journalism itself will need to transform to perform the service it must in this age of crises. In seeking to reflect external reality, I believe journalists can gain a great deal by spending some time looking within. As the pressures on our industry evolve and grow, I intend to play my role in widening access to some of the transformative kinds of inner work I have encountered in my explorations of the margins.

I appreciate your interest in the site ( and there’s a more conventional CV here). I welcome inquiries via the contact form. Thank you!

Thank you @wblau for naming the harm that can be caused in news organisations by "accusing climate journalists of being activists ... simply because they’ve expressed a high degree of urgency or concern about climate change." This is a real problem.
